Billy Collins on Sonny Rollins
Source:
JazzWax by Marc Myers
A couple of weeks ago, Billy Collins sent me an unpublished poem. Billy is a former U.S. Poet Laureate (2001-2003) and author most recently of The Rain in Portugal (Random House). His poems always have a jazz feel—improvised, deft and witty. Between the December holidays, Billy wrote a poem about Sonny Rollins. Before we get to his verse, here's a note Billy sent along with background: The poem began on a morning walk/run that I'm in the habit of taking ...

Martin Luther King + Jazz
Source:
JazzWax by Marc Myers
Today in the States, it's Martin Luther King Jr. Day, a national holiday since 1986 but not observed by all states until 2000. I thought it would be fitting to hear seven jazz tributes to the civil rights leader and the movement. Each of the jazz pieces that follows is a heartfelt work rooted in the church and King's spirit: Here's John Coltrane playing Alabama on Ralph Gleason's Jazz Casual TV show in San Francisco. The song uses the cadence ...

Florida meets jazz singer Tess Collins

Ken Franckling's Jazz Notes
Tess Collins took a circuitous route for her first concert before a Florida jazz audience. It began in her native Maine, wove through several major cities in China where she appears regularly (including Beijing and Shanghai) and her new home base London. The Southwest Florida stop coincided with a vacation visit with relatives on Florida's east coast. She came to the Gulf Coast on Thursday, February 26, to perform as a special guest of pianist Mac Chrupcala's trio at the ...

Burt Collins: Time, Space and Blues
Source:
JazzWax by Marc Myers
Sometime after March 1969, trumpeters Burt Collins and Joe Shepley went into the studio and recorded a masterpiece. I'm betting you've never heard the album—Time, Space & the Blues—because it has never been released digitally and is rare on vinyl. Pianist Mike Abene wrote many of the songs and all of the arrangements except one—Soft Landing, which was arranged by Johnny Carisi. In fact, this is as much Abene's album as it is Collins and Shepley's. What makes this album ...
