All About Jazz is celebrating Louis Armstrong's birthday today!

By virtue of the role he played in its evolution during the first quarter of the 20th century, Louis Armstrong is regarded as the most influential jazz musician in history. This distinction is coupled with his stewardship of jazz around the world over the next five decades as the earliest and greatest ambassador of America's first true musical art form. With the liberating effects of the Jazz Age reverberating on world ...

Louis Hayes: Exactly Right

Louis Hayes: Exactly Right

Source: JazzWax by Marc Myers

What do John Coltrane's Lover, Grant Green's Gooden's Corner, Joe Henderson's The Kicker, The Artistry of Freddie Hubbard, Bennie Green's Back on the Scene and Wes Montgomery's Movin' Along have in common? Louis Hayes was on drums. Today, Louis is one of the last men drumming from jazz's galloping hard-bop era. Best of all, the 85-year-old artist hasn't lost an ounce of energy or style. As evidenced by his latest album, Exactly Right! (Savant), Louis not only is at the ...

Louis Stewart: Out on His Own

Louis Stewart: Out on His Own

Source: JazzWax by Marc Myers

One of my favorite jazz guitar albums has been reissued. Out on His Own was recorded by Irish guitarist Louis Stewart in Bray, Ireland, between November 1976 and January 1977. Instead of one Louis, you get two. It's a solo album but he accompanies himself by overdubbing on eight of the album's original 13 tracks. The reissue, by Livia Records, has been remastered and includes six bonus tracks and a fabulous 16-page booklet. Oliver Dowling, a friend in Dublin, knew ...

Landmark Album From Jazz Guitar Legend Louis Stewart Re-Issued

Source: Dermot Rogers

Out on His Own, the 1977 solo album by Louis Stewart—Ireland’s major contribution to world class jazz guitar playing—is to be reissued on the reactivated Livia Records on February 24. Recorded when Stewart was playing at his formidable peak and alternating between touring with saxophonist and legendary jazz club owner Ronnie Scott and making trips back to play in packed Dublin clubs bars, Out on His Own is aptly named. Tracks feature Stewart playing alone and to his own rhythm ...

Backgrounder: Leon Spencer's 'Louisiana Slim'

Source: JazzWax by Marc Myers

Leon Spencer Jr. was and remains my favorite organist. In the early 1970s, he was part of Prestige's stable of soul-jazz musicians who recorded relentlessly as leaders and sidemen on other artists' albums. One of my first albums purchased, in 1971, was Spencer's Louisiana Slim. Backing Spencer were Virgil Jones (tb) Grover Washington, Jr. (ts, flute), Melvin Sparks (g) Idris Muhammad (d) and Buddy Caldwell (congas)—the classic Prestige lineup at the time. Bob Porter produced and the engineer was Rudy ...

Louis Prima: King of the Swingers

Louis Prima: King of the Swingers

Source: JazzWax by Marc Myers

Born in New Orleans, trumpeter, singer and entertainer Louis Prima grew up in the city's Italian-American community. He was influenced not only by New Orleans's Black jazz and folk culture but also the tradition of commedia dell'arte that dates back to 16th-century Italy. Comedy's earliest form of improv, this form of street theater poked fun at neighborhood characters and customs, and gave us the buffoon, the harlequin and, later, the clown and circus. Prima's combination of jazz and humor was ...
