Jacob Dalager

Dr. Jacob Dalager is an international soloist, recording artist, award-winning composer, and Assistant Professor of Trumpet and Jazz at New Mexico State University. As director of jazz, Dalager brought the NMSU Jazz Ensemble to the 2022 Roswell Jazz Fest, where the band performed with legends Houston Person, Chuck Redd, and Dan Barrett. He has also initiated Studio Jazz Orchestra, Jazz Lab Band, and Southwest Honor Jazz Band projects while also expanding students’ improvisational proficiency with Jazz Masterclasses. Carrying on NMSU’s Jazz Jumpstart Festival tradition, Dalager has brought in bands from throughout the region to work with renowned clinicians, including Bobby Shew, Owen Broder, and this year, Terell Stafford and Raffy Bushman. Prior to joining NMSU, he was based in the Washington D.C. area and on faculty at The Catholic University of America, Frostburg State University, and Frederick Community College.

A versatile crossover performer, Jacob is the solo chair of the Border Jazz Orchestra. He headlined the 2022 FIMUS Jazz Festival in Brazil and was lead trumpet of the Wammy-award-winning bands Black Masala and Shamans of Sound. He has performed at the Singapore International Jazz Festival and World Youth Jazz Festival; with James Morrison and Kitaro; opened for John Legend; recorded with the Thomson Big Band; and performed in the house bands of Carnival Cruise Lines.
