Roberto Miranda's Home Music Ensemble: Live at the Bing Theater; Los Angeles, 1985

by Karl Ackermann
Roberto Miranda has appeared on almost one-hundred albums but has been lightly recorded as a leader, and inexplicably struggled to generate interest among labels. Dark Tree Records has released some great Horace Tapscott performances from the '70s and '80s. The label resurrected a Miranda-led session on Live at the Bing Theater; Los Angeles, 1985. That's enough to get me thinking of Hollywood trumpet ballads. Here's one that always ...

Unless you lived in western Oregon in the late 1960s and '70s or the 1990s, you probably have no idea who Buddy Fite was. I bumped into his jazz guitar playing by accident last week on YouTube and was astonished. So I did a little research in old newspapers. Born in Vancouver, Wash., in 1938, Ronald Buddy" Fite weighed in at 285 pounds and stood more than 6 feet tall, He was introduced to the guitar when he was 9, ...

West Coast jazz in the 1950s wasn't exclusively a white enterprise. There was a significant number of black jazz artists in Los Angeles then as well who played in the breezy, contrapuntal style. But in the late 1940s and early '50s, black jazz artists were largely isolated as a result of the segregated locals of the American Federation of Musicians. Black musicians belonged to Local 767 while whites belonged to Local 47. In April 1953, Local 47 was amalgamated with ...

As with all of Elaine's concerts, this one demonstrates yet again what an exceptional and powerful jazz pianist she is. By powerful, I mean sensitive, driven and strong. Having held her hands in mine, I can tell you she has enormous strength. Go make yourself some ...
