Eddie Palmieri (1936-2025)

Eddie Palmieri (1936-2025)

Source: JazzWax by Marc Myers

Eddie Palmieri, a pianist, composer and leader who pioneered a smoldering Latin-jazz sound fronted by trombones and incorporated the jazz jam session into his approach, helping him widen his music and win eight Grammy Awards, died on August 6. He was 88. Eddie was the younger brother of Charlie Palmieri, a Latin pianist with enormous rhythmic power. Eddie bypassed the boogaloo in the 1960s, preferring instead to lay the instrumental groundwork for what would become salsa in the early 1970s. ...

Perfection: Red Garland & Eddie Lockjaw Davis (1960)

Source: JazzWax by Marc Myers

I've long wondered what was going through the mind of producer Esmond Edwards when he teamed the Red Garland Trio with tenor saxophonist Eddie “Lockjaw" Davis. My surprise hasn't been about the pairing. Bringing them together was a stroke of genius. My problem is they only released three tracks—We'll Be Together Again, Softly Baby and When Your Lover Has Gone. The rest were by the trio. A fourth track, called Untitled Blues, was recorded but remained unreleased until 1995, when ...

Eddie Wasserman: The Small Groups

Eddie Wasserman: The Small Groups

Source: JazzWax by Marc Myers

Eddie Wasserman wasn't a star but he could have been. He never was a leader on his own session. Instead, he spent the bulk of his career playing woodwinds in top big bands. His first recording session was with Benny Goodman in December 1948 and remained there into 1948. Going forward, he was a favorite of many bandleaders through the years. But who was Wasserman and what did he sound like? To find out, I did some archive research, and ...

Tina Turner (1939-2023)

Source: JazzWax by Marc Myers

The moment I heard that Tina Turner had died yesterday at 2:45 p.m., I started writing. I knew what was about to happen. Within minutes, I heard from the arts editor asking for an appreciation needed asap. An hour and 45 minutes later, my essay was done, fact-checked and filed. Tina was a force of nature. Driven, high-energy and charismatic, she had three careers. As a member of the Ike & Tina Turner Revue, she was instrumental in their many ...
