Daniel Nagel

Daniel grew up in southern Germany, where he was immersed in music from an early age thanks to his mother, a piano teacher. In 2022, he moved to New York City to pursue a Master’s degree at the City College of New York in Harlem, studying with renowned jazz bassist David Wong.

In New York, Daniel is an active performer, collaborating with both the next generation of jazz musicians and established artists such as Ray Gallon, Rodney Green, and Blue Note recording artist George Braith. He has performed at some of the city’s most iconic venues, including Carnegie Hall, Dizzy’s Club at Jazz at Lincoln Center, and Ornithology Jazz Club.

Before relocating to New York, Daniel lived in Amsterdam, where he graduated from the esteemed Conservatorium van Amsterdam. During his time there, he worked with prominent Dutch jazz musicians such as Ben van Gelder, Reinier Baas, Jasper Blom, and Joris Roelofs.

Daniel was a co-leader of the German-based quintet WELS, which released its self-titled debut album in 2019. He is also featured on recordings with the Sam Newbould Quintet, Ilia Rayskin (Introspections), and the CvA Concert Big Band, among others.

His musical journey has taken him to some of Europe’s most celebrated venues, including Sunset Sunside (Paris), Vortex (London), Elbphilharmonie (Hamburg), Bimhuis (Amsterdam), and LantarenVenster (Rotterdam). He has also appeared at major international festivals such as the Panama Jazz Festival, Umbria Jazz, North Sea Jazz Festival, and Amsterdam Jazzfest.

Daniel’s move to New York has been supported by generous scholarships from the DAAD, the Dutch Cultuurfonds, and Mel Litoff, former owner of the legendary Sweet Basil Jazz Club.
