Daniel Nagel

Daniel grew up in southern Germany. His mother was a piano teacher, which resulted in him being surrounded by music from a young age. He moved to New York City in 2022 to pursue his Master’s Degree at City College of New York in Harlem, studying with first-call New York jazz bassist, David Wong. Previously, Daniel resided in Amsterdam and graduated from the prestigious Conservatorium van Amsterdam. In those years, he was fortunate to collaborate with well-known Dutch musicians including Ben van Gelder, Reinier Baas, Jasper Blom, and Joris Roelofs. Through the conservatory, he had the chance to play and work with John and Gerald Clayton, Dick Oatts, Vince Mendoza and Brad Mehldau. Daniel co-led the German-based Quintet WELS which released its homonymous debut record in 2019. Also he can be heard on recordings of the Sam Newbould Quintet, Ilia Rayskin “Introspections” and the CvA concert big band, among others. His musical activities allowed him to perform at some of Europe’s most famous venues (Sunset Sunside Paris, Vortex London, Elbphilarmonie Hamburg, Bimhuis Amsterdam, Lantarenvenster Rotterdam)  and renowned festivals such as Panama Jazz Festival, Umbria Jazz, North Sea Jazz Festival and Amsterdam Jazzfest. His recent move to New York City is made possible through generous scholarships by the Dutch Prins Bernard Cultuurfonds and Mel Litoff, who was the owner of NYC’s legendary Sweet Basil Jazz Club.
