Backgrounder: Milt Bucker's 'Block Chords Parade'

Backgrounder: Milt Bucker's 'Block Chords Parade'

Source: JazzWax by Marc Myers

What are block chords? That's when a pianist (or guitarist) plays a melody with chords rather than individual notes. This is done with the top note of the chord playing the melody line with chord notes below creating the harmony. Block chords are often played on piano with a “locked hands" technique, when both hands play block chords in unison or lock-step. To illustrate, let's visit with the great Dick Hyman... As Dick notes, Milt Buckner pioneered the block-chords sound, ...

RIAA Asks BitTorrent To Block Infringing Content

Source: HypeBot

In the latest attack on file sharing, the Recording Industry Association of America has requested that BitTorrent put into place a hash filter in order to block infringing content, but will it do more harm than good? By Mike Masnick of TechDirt Almost exactly a year ago, the Hollywood-funded and run astroturfing group “Creative Future" posted a bizarre and fact-challenged article attacking BitTorrent Inc. for copyright infringement, and demanding that the company “take responsibility" for how the BitTorrent protocol was being used. There was, ...

Tonight, the Jazz at Holmes series at Washington University presents “Freedom ...

Detroit's Annual Block Party

Detroit's Annual Block Party

Source: JazzINK by Andrea Canter

The forecast for the Twin Cities says scattered thunderstorms for Friday. That means a lot of finger-crossing, weather map pondering, and figuring out the best timing for our private plane departure for Detroit and the 32nd annual Detroit Jazz Festival, one of the largest in the world and the largest free jazz festival in North America. I can hardly wait to join about 750,000 jazz fans in Motor City. For most of the year, Detroit is an unlikely destination. But ...

Dan Block Plays the Music of Duke Ellington

Dan Block Plays the Music of Duke Ellington

Source: Gapplegate Music Review by Grego Edwards

Reedman Dan Block is cool with me. His Plays the Music of Duke Ellington, From His World to Mine (Miles High 8612) is cool too. It's not just another Duke tribute. For this one Dan obviously spent some time with the song list. It's not the well-worn blockbusters on display here, but instead some of the relatively under-recorded gems like the WWII era “Kissing Bug," the New Orleans Suite movement “Second Line," the Bigard-not-canard “Are You Sticking?" (he wasn't) and ...

Breaking: House Republicans Move to Block Net Neutrality Rules...

Source: Digital Music News

Late Thursday, House Republicans voted to bar the FCC from imposing net neutrality guidelines on broadband providers. As part of an amendment attached to a larger spending bill, the FCC would be prohibited from using federal funds to force ISPs to comply with various access requirements.

This is a highly contentious issue, and ISPs have serious legal challenges against these rules. But groups like the Future of Music Coalition and A2IM are squarely in favor of net neutrality regulations.

And, ...

Facebook's Reverbnation Block Was Just "A Mistake", but Serves as Reminder of Larger Issue

Source: HypeBot

Yesterday, ReverbNation told its tens of thousands of active artist users that Facebook had disabled RN links on their site. “This was a mistake in one of our automated systems for preventing spam," a Facebook spokesperson told Hypebot and by late in the day, the problem had been fixed. But the incident serves as a reminder of a hazard that accompanies the incredible potential of interconnected marketing—lack of control. While not confirmed officially by either company, it's likely that Facebook's ...
