Gal Costa (1945-2022)

Gal Costa, one of Brazil's most respected and beloved singers and recording artists admired as much for her courage as her performing charm, vocal range and vast knowledge of standards and obscure songs, died on November 9. She was 77. Costa's singing and guitar-playing career began in August of 1964, during a period of enormous musical celebration and political upheaval. At the time, Brazil's capital, Rio De Janeiro, was the center of a global music phenomenon known as the bossa ...

On May 1, 1969, Fred Rogers was in Washington, D.C., testifying before the U.S. Senate Subcommittee on Communications. Rogers hosted Mister Rogers' Neighborhood, a children's show launched in Pittsburgh in 1968 on National Educational Television. He was in the hot seat trying to prevent a promised $20 million federal grant to PBS and the Corporation for Public Broadcasting from being slashed in half. President Nixon wanted to cut the grant in half to use the money to support the war ...

Guitarist Tommaso Costa Debuts with “Too Far, Too Close”

Source: All About Jazz

For his 2019 debut Too Far, Too Close, Costa combines electric jazz, rock, and blues into his own guitar sound with European sophistication and style that resonates from his homeland of Italy. “My favorite thing is the sound of the record," Costa explains. “It's got a great modern tone with a vintage feel." Too Far, Too Close crosscuts selections by composers from jazz (Keith Jarrett, Richie Beirach), from pop and rock (Stevie Wonder, Don Henley), and composers with ...

Johnny Costa: Mr. Rogers' Piano

Two jazz pianists come to mind when talk turns to children. The first and best known is Vince Guaraldi, the composer of songs and incidental music for the Charlie Brown specials and the pianist who played them. Guaraldi died in 1976. The second keyboard player is Johnny Costa, the musical director and keyboard player on Mister Rogers' Neighborhood from 1968 until his death in 1996. Costa was born in Arnold, Pa., about a half hour from Pittsburgh. He began studying ...

The recent Rifftides review of pianist Sullivan Fortner’s new album mentions Johnny Costa as an influence. The influence came early. Like millions of other American children, Fortner grew up watching Mr. Rogers’ Neighborhood. He was captivated by the music Costa played with his trio on the television show. Costa was Rogers’ musical director from the birth of the program in 1968 to Costa’s death in 1996 at the age of 74. Mr. Rogers made this very short documentary about his ...

Benevento/Russo/Krasno :: Costa Wedding The adventure began last winter when Chris Gleason proposed to Robin Taxman on Jam Cruise 7. But when he called from NOLA during Jazz Fest a few months ...

Johnny Mathis: Don Costa Sessions

Johnny Mathis: Don Costa Sessions

Source: JazzWax by Marc Myers

I've never been a Johnny Mathis fan. Other than admiring Steven Spielberg's use of Chances Are in Close Encounters of the Third Kind and a December weakness for Sleigh Ride, Mathis has always been akin to drinking honey out of the jar. Pop heir to Nat King Cole in the late 1950s, Mathis wasn't much of a jazz artist and was way too expressive and swing-less for savvy pop. So when the newly remastered Rapture and Romantically arrived on a ...
