Backgrounder: Antonio Carlos Jobim's 'Wave'

The ever beautiful Getz/Gilberto may have been the album that popularized the bossa nova when released in 1964, but Antonio Carlos Jobim's Wave was, for me, its instrumental peer. Both albums were produced by Creed Taylor, the former on Verve and the latter on Creed's CTI imprint at A&M Records. This Jobim masterpiece was arranged by Claus Ogerman and recorded in 1967 on May 22, 23 and 24 and on June 15. Jobim played guitar, piano and harpsichord. Recorded at ...

Duduka Da Fonseca: Tom Jobim

Source:
JazzWax by Marc Myers
Duduka Da Fonseca plays drums with a stirring, sensuality. It's like listening to crushed ice melt at the beach. His last album in 2018 was a loving tribute to Brazilian samba-funk pianist Dom Salvador, who I believe is still playing regularly at New York's River Café at age 81. Duduka's latest album is Samba Jazz & Tom Jobim (Sunnyside), with pianist Helio Alves and vocalist Maucha Adnet. Born in Brazil, Alves is a pianist and composer who now lives in ...

A sultry celebration of Jobim, mostly

Ken Franckling's Jazz Notes
The Bossa Nova All Stars put their stamp on the sultry sound of Brazil's most popular musical export on Saturday, March 31 in Venice FL, where they focused almost entirely on the extensive songbook of composer Antonio Carlos Jobim. Jobim was one of the pioneers of bossa nova, a late 1950s fusion of the Brazilian samba and jazz. His contributions to the art form were mighty and are best known. The focus wasn't really surprising, considering that the singer featured ...

Getz, Two Gilbertos And Jobim

Rifftides by Doug Ramsey
Stan Getz was born on this date in 1927. The day has an hour or so to go in this time zone, so before it expires, let’s listen to one of the master tenor saxophonist’s great collaborations. He and the bossa nova pioneer Joao Gilberto teamed up for a 1963 album whose title consisted of their last names. It quickly became a hit at a time when conventional wisdom concluded that rock and roll had forced jazz off the charts. ...

Tom Jobim: Melody Master

With New York's temperatures down in the 20s today with snow, what better way to warm up than with the late pianist, guitarist and singer-songwriter Antonio Carlos Jobim. Millions of people can play his music, but only Jobim had the right time, the romantic heart and the distinct feel. Here are five video clips of the master himself: Here's Jobim in 1964 with pianist João Donato... Here's Jobim at the piano playing Wave... Here's Jobim on an hour-long TV show ...

Jobim and Regina: The Waters of March

Source:
Rifftides by Doug Ramsey
While two days of March remain, it would be a good idea to revisit an Antonio Carlos Jobim classic. It is, of course, “Águas de Marco.” March is the rainiest time of year in Rio de Janeiro. Jobim fashioned the progress of the music and the Portuguese lyric to suggest the storm waters’ relentless flow toward the sea. The words, in Portuguese and in his English version, constitute a paen to “the promise of life.” A 2001 poll of Brazilian ...
