The Joy of Saxes

Composer, arranger and bandleader Jim Roberts was the Charlotte County Jazz Society’s first guest artist with an outdoor concert back in 1991, the year he move to the Orlando area from New York City. He’s been a frequent visitor to the CCJS concert series over the years – and his visits never get dated or tiring. He brought his Saxtet, with a mighty three-reed horn line, back to Port Charlotte FL on Monday, March 11. They turned in a superb ...

In the spring of 1968, Joachim E. Berendt (above) of Germany's MPS label caught wind that alto saxophonists Lee Konitz, Phil Woods, Pony Poindexter and Leo Wright were all in Europe touring separately. Berendt took a chance and reached out to all of them, inviting them to MPS's fabled recording studios in Villingen, in the Black Forest. Berendt also hired pianist Steve Kuhn, bassist Palle Danielsson and drummer Jon Christiensen. On June 2 and 3, the seven musicians recorded seven ...

Hymie Schertzer: All the King's Saxes

Woody Herman routinely receives plaudits for employing a killer sax section in the late 1940s. But Benny Goodman also featured a tight bunch of reeds during the same period and into the '50s I'm a reed guy and a big fan of albums that are sax-section centric. I light up when I hear the sound of tightly voiced saxophones that swing easy. My “Sax Sectioin" iTunes folder includes the following recordings... Al Cohn and the Sax Section (1956) Zoot Sims ...

Though not a single jazz musician is pictured on the cover of the Beatles' Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, John Lennon and Paul McCartney, in collusion with producer George Martin, made strong use of the saxophone and British jazz players in their later works. Used mostly for texture or novelty effect, saxes in Beatles' works were typically masked slightly by overdubbed effects or arranged to sound like plastic instruments.

Here are five of my favorite sax passages on Fab ...

Hal McKusick: Cross Section-Saxes

Hal McKusick: Cross Section-Saxes

Hal McKusick was and remains a jazz musician's musician. Even in his earliest days in Boyd Raeburn's band in the mid-1940s, Hal's distinct sound on the alto saxophone was admired by bandmates Lucky Thompson, Oscar Pettiford and Dizzy Gillespie as well as contemporaries like Charlie Parker, Claude Thornhill and Quincy Jones. Hal's ability to navigate the most complex arrangements effortlessly while delivering a cool, urgent sound made him one of the most sought-after session musicians of the 1950s and beyond.
