My Jazz Story
I was first exposed to jazz through my father. He wasn’t a musician, but he loved jazz, and I started listening seriously when I was about thirteen or fourteen. Around the
same time, I began playing guitar, and the two things became intertwined. I collected records, tapes and CDs, went to concerts and clubs around Los Angeles, and
became fascinated not only by the music but by the musicians themselves—how they played, what they listened to, the instruments and amplifiers they used, and the
history behind it all.
I love jazz because there is always something more to discover. You can hear a record for years and suddenly notice something you never heard before—a voicing, a bass
line, the way one musician responds to another. That curiosity is also what draws me to writing about jazz. I enjoy following the threads behind the music and finding
stories that haven't been told in detail.
One of the most important experiences in my own musical life was studying guitar with Carol Kaye in Los Angeles in the 1990s. Her approach to harmony and
improvisation had a lasting influence on the way I think about music.
My advice to new jazz listeners: don't worry about understanding jazz. Find a musician or record that grabs you and follow the trail. One record leads to another musician,
another session, another era, and before long you've discovered an entire world.
