My Jazz Story

I love jazz because...it allows me a more creative path the pursue through improvisation than what I was experiencing in the opera and musical theater world. I was first exposed to jazz...as a child when I was studying piano with Dave Catney and he had me listening to so many great compositions originally intended for musical theater that had become jazz standards of the great american songbook. I met [musician name]... Dave Brubeck. I've met a TON of people I'm a super fan of that are certainly notable (Jane Monheit being one of them and we've become fast friends since) but I simultaneously nearly fell on the floor, passed out, peed my pants and puked when Dave Brubeck walked into my gig at the Magnolia Hotel in Houston, Texas the year before he passed away. He and his wife we the most adorable and down to earth people you'd ever want to meet. I wanted to adopt them and carry them around in my purse. The best show I ever attended was... Jane Monheit. Hands down. She and her band are simply flawless. The first jazz record I bought was... a complilation disc of Billie Holiday tracks. Im not a big Billie Holiday fan these days, though. My advice to new listeners... ease into it. Start with the creators of the genre and move through time with your listening. What we are all doing in modern recording these days is steeped in the tradition of those that created the genre. Seek them out first. Please. Or whatever else you have in mind. I love cake. And coffee. A lot.
