Thelonious Dub

New Groove Jazz

About Me

“T-Dub has definitely tapped into an innovative sound that respectfully mimics their predecessors while it simultaneously breathes new life into music in general” - LA Times, 2009

“I'm always looking for new jazz beyond the usual suspects and there's tons of stuff coming in each day from all over the world. Thelonious Dub came to me from out of the blue and just knocked my socks off. There's great writing, great playing and great spirit here...Highly recommended.” - Russ Davis, MoJa Modern Jazz Radio

”Fergie (Black Eyed Peas) and Josh Duhamel (Transformers), enjoying a set by jazz/dub act, Thelonious Dub, in the lounge at West Restaurant & Lounge atop L.A.'s Hotel Angeleno. Duhamel was especially enthusiastic, cheering on the band, while Fergie also said how much she loved then. The two also bought the band's CD and snapped a picture with another guest before taking off.” - People Magazine, July 2010

”Triumphantly spacey - distinctive use of horns and effects. We’re lucky to have (Thelonious Dub) knocking around L.A. restaurants and clubs” - Greg Burk, MetalJazz.com

“Wholly earning their title. What I love best is the heavy groove that Thelonious Dub lays out on every single track.” – Todd Prichard, PraiseForWallFowers.com

”Original with great chemistry, which equals a unique sound. Excellent work!” - Hank Howe, INET Jazz 365 Internet Radio globatonebroadcasting.com

Thelonious Dub is a Los Angeles band that began by playing reggae versions of Thelonious Monk tunes. Gaining in popularity, the quartet’s original compositions featured heavily with their audience and is captured in their 2010 second release “Master Plan B.”

Formed in 2007, Guitarist Joe Bartone was the leader of the Boston band - Fat Buddah before coming to Los Angeles and meeting Mandorico’s drummer Sean Rainey. Soon after they joined up with tenor player Space Kyle and Brandon Schmidt, upright bassist for Chord Four. Together they cultivated a chemistry of sound; nurturing ideas to flow freely among them.

Master Plan B was written produced by Joe Bartone and recorded by Paul Du Gre’ (L7, Weezer, Bill Frisell, Leo Kottke). TDub incorporates synths, delays, deep bass and hypnotic rhythms in their jazz music. Paul Du’ Gre also engineered their first, self-titled release - a collection of jazz standards interpreted as reggae instrumentals.

TDub performs regularly in Los Angeles and the Bay Area. You can catch them every Monday 8-11pm at the West Lounge, 17th floor penthouse of the Hotel Angeleno, Los Angeles.
