Scott Marvill

GRAMMY Recognized Smooth Contemporary Jazz Guitarist/Bassist

About Me

GRAMMY Recognized Smooth Contemporary Jazz Guitarist/Bassist Scott Marvill has shared the stage with rising artists, legends and Grammy award winners in the jazz community such as Bob James, Kirk Whalum, Gerald Albright, Jeff Lorber, Chuck Loeb, Andy Snitzer, Jeff Ryan, Adrian Crutchfield, Ragan Whiteside, Jeff Kashiwa, Oli Silk, Grover Washington Jr. and the list goes on.

A founding member of the Jazz group Freeport, is originally from Philadelphia, PA. His father, a jazz drummer, had a great effect on his early development. Scott remembers music always being played in his house and recalled that his Dad would go to the basement after dinner and play along with recordings. Scott joined in on any instrument found in the basement, be it bongos, a woodblock, the guitar, even a box.

One day his Godfather, a jazz guitarist himself, showed Scott a version of the 9th chord, and that did it. He became a guitarist then at the age of 11.

In his twenties, he found himself attending Combs College of Music, playing gigs, teaching guitar and bass, traveling and being a session man at Ridge Sound Studios in Philly. He worked with numerous acts such as The Temptations, Four Tops, Grover Washington Jr, Leslie Gore, The Dovells, and most of the touring oldies acts in the 1980s.

Deciding to get off the road and focus on a single project, he started Freeport in Philly in 1981 with then bassist Mike Serratore. The jazz/funk band had success and enjoyed a run of 8 years opening for Tower Of Power, The Temptations, Special EFX and other national acts.

Now based in North Carolina he has launched a solo career, signed to Unisoul Records, opened a home based recording studio, play locally and continues to share stage and studio with a Who's Who of today's Jazz Community.
