Samuel Pompeo
About Me
Born in Americana, Brazil, he began his saxophone studies in 1982 at the Municipal School
of Music, where he had his first musical experiences with the Municipal Band of Americana. He has
always been interested in all instruments of the saxophone family, as well as other woodwinds like
the flute, piccolo, and clarinet. This curiosity led him to seek the necessary skills to play everything
from baritone saxophone to piccolo. To enhance his abilities, he had the opportunity to study with
some of the most renowned musicians in São Paulo and Brazil.
He has recorded or performed with various artists from Brazilian and international popular music.
These collaborations include prominent names such as Jane Duboc, Elba Ramalho, Alceu Valença,
Gilberto Gil, Pepeu Gomes, Jon Anderson (Yes), Alice Cooper, Fito Páez, Toquinho, Maria Rita, Jair
Rodrigues, Simoninha, Ivan Lins, Gal Costa, and Zélia Duncan.
As a guest musician, he has had the privilege of participating in prestigious concerts with the
leading symphony orchestras in Brazil. Noteworthy among these are the São Paulo Municipal
Theater Symphony Orchestra, the São Paulo State Symphony Orchestra (OSESP), the Experimental
Repertoire Orchestra and the Municipal Orchestras of Campinas, Ribeirão Preto, and Santo André.
Additionally, he has collaborated with the University of São Paulo Symphony Orchestra (USP) and
the renowned Brazilian Symphony Orchestra. Expanding his musical collaborations, he has also
performed alongside essential jazz artists, such as Banda Mantiqueira, Tad Nash (USA), Ben Allison
(USA), Ohad Talmor (USA), Bepi Damati (Italy), Gilson Peranzzetta, Ryan Keberle (USA), and
Woody Witt (USA).
These experiences have greatly enriched his repertoire and allowed him to explore new
musical directions, combining his versatility and talent with various styles and artistic expressions.
His musical journey continues to be marked by significant collaborations in national and
international music scenes. Additionally, he regularly serves as a guest lecturer in workshops and
masterclasses at Brazilian and international institutions. These include the University of the State of
Santa Catarina (UDESC), Anhembi-Morumbi University, Sax Fest Brazil at the Santa Marcelina
University, the Dramatic and Musical Conservatory of Tatuí, the Federal University of Maranhão
(UFMA), the Pedagogical Journey for Band Musicians (JPMB), the Lisbon College of Music (ESML),
the University of Aveiro, and the “Fiato al Brasile” Festival at the G. Sarti Municipal School of Music
in Faenza, Italy. These teaching opportunities have allowed him to share his expertise with students
and musicians worldwide, contributing to the development of new generations of musicians.
With a doctorate in music from the University of Aveiro (Portugal) and UNESP (Brazil), he
is currently a professor at the Municipal School of Music in São Paulo and a guest professor at the
Fiato al Brasile festival in Italy. As a performer, he leads the Samuel Pompeo Quinteto, a musical
project that showcases his unique and creative artistic expression. Additionally, he has performed in
a wide range of musical styles in both Brazil and Europe, further expanding his versatility with the
saxophone and other instruments. His career as a musician, educator, and researcher demonstrates
his dedication to the world of music, whether on stage, in the classroom, or the continuous
pursuit of artistic improvement and growth.
