About Me
My Jazz Story
I love jazz because it most closely expresses the many styles and genres that have become
my personal musical style.
I was first exposed to jazz as a child - maybe 3 or 4 years old listening to my dad's old
78's of Sinatra, The Merry Macs, Billie Holiday, so many more. Also I blame my uncle Phil
for introducing me to Al Jolson.
I met Artie Shaw at a dinner. I still have the program he signed for me. He was just the
sweetest guy.
The first jazz record I bought was, I think, Benny Goodman Live at Carnegie Hall. Damn, I
couldn't get the swing out of my soul!
My advice to new listeners is to allow the eclectic combination of styles and sounds of Zen
Boogie in. Based around my odd combination of Jazz, Blues, Rock and even a little country,
my writing style is in someways old school, but I hope it's my stories that keep you
engaged.
I am fortunate to be surrounded by some of the most loyal musicians who seem to
sincerely enjoy playing my music with me (and making me sound good!) Bob Helfant on
guitar, Doug Snyder on bass and Bobby Girnius on drums. I am one fortunate fella!
