My Jazz Story

My dad was a jazz musician and we had music in the house my whole life. He introduced me to Count Basie at the Claremont Hotel in Berkeley, CA. I met Frank L. Jackson and his wife when he was a regular at Kelly's on Park in Alameda, CA. My dad's Ozark Club Trio played nightly at the Ozark Club in the 1940's. The club was an integrated jazz venue from 1933 until it burned 1962 in Great Falls, MT. The local PBS affiliate filmed a tribute to the Ozark Club musicians in 2007 at the Great Falls Historical Society. My mom, husband, and kids were lucky enough to attend. My husband's step-grandfather was George Sylvester "Red" Callender an American string bass and tuba player. Red was one of the first black musicians to work regularly in the commercial studios. He made his recording debut at 19 with Louie Armstrong's band.
