About Me
Composer / multi-instrumentalist improviser making records at home since 2008
I go by Mitch Protheroe in the music world, and in my personal life. I'm a professional music producer with many album releases since I started my journey in 2008; jazz has always been one of my primary sounds in my writing, often using orchestral instrumentation to create deeper feelings and flow. My music falls under primarily alternative jazz and progressive rock, most frequently. I'm inspired and relate heavily to the works of Tortoise, Allan Holdsworth, Frank Zappa, and Animals As Leaders, though I find that my style is just complemented by their work and not totally copying their sound. I have more of a fusion-driven mindset and can even relate heavily to bands like Polyphia and music groups like Shpongle. My passion is to write music that elevates mood and feeling, and often that means using instruments like saxophone, vibraphone, guitar, bass guitar, drums, and other orchestral or band instruments to complete the sound. I'm also an avid producer of my own music and use sound effects frequently in my work. Dynamic songwriting for me lives heavily in the regions of through-composed, freestyle sounding music, whether I accomplish that on the computer or in my home studio or elsewhere. Typically though, I am the only musician involved until the final masters come into play, in which case I have a favorite professional studio engineer who handles my mixes.
