My Jazz Story
I became an adult as a musician when I learned to lose control in
2008. I had played my whole life, and despite doing some
improvisations and deconstructions on standards, as well as classical
music, I was firmly tethered to the musical voice of others. There was
also a fear of failure and risk to fully be in the moment expressing
myself. This was until I walked in for an impromptu session with
Daniel Carter, Federico Ughi, Damien Richardson and David Moss in 2008
(The Gowanus Recordings). I noticed that the beautiful piano had no
music stand. Daniel stood next to me, and just started playing a
soothing free improv. I think I started playing, and I looked over at
him, with his eyes closed, and closed mine as well. Soon the quintet
was playing nonstop for several hours. I had finally thrown away the
music of others, and instead combined my voice in that moment with
others. I had grown up.
