Mary Rose
About Me
Mary Rose moved to New York City in 1975 and became immersed in the creative and
dynamic Jazz Loft Scene where exploration in jazz improvisation was continued from the
legacy of free jazz started in the 1960s.
During this rich and exciting musical time, Mary joined the Space Light Band led by former
Albert Ayler bassist Steve Tintweiss and included Ken Simon, tenor, and Lou Grassi, drums.
After listening to the recordings of Charlie Parker and Clifford Brown, she was devoted to
learning and playing bebop and standards as well as continuing to play music “outside” the
harmonic and rhythmic form of traditional jazz.
Mary studied flute and jazz improvisation with multi-instrumentalist, composer, and
educator Makanda Ken McIntyre, and composer and master flutist Robert Dick who
specializes in multiphonics and extended techniques on the flute.
After moving from New York City to New Mexico, she formed the jazz duo Deuce with bassist
Joseph Salack in 2002 and they performed at venues and private parties in Taos and Santa Fe.
In 2007, she joined the Fort Collins jazz group IN THE MOMENT and in 2009, they recorded the CD
Straight Ahead. IN THE MOMENT soon began appearing at different venues in Fort Collins,
Colorado. They performed at The Fort Collins Music Experiment that showcases the talented and
diverse bands in Northern Colorado ranging from bluegrass and rap to rhythm and blues and jazz.
On Straight Ahead, IN THE MOMENT offers creative harmonies and swinging rhythms that get your
fingers snapping and toes tapping and evoke subtle shades of musical feeling and nuance.
In 2013 she led The Instinct Jazz Quartet comprised of Mary Rose, flute; Gary Yamane, alto, guitar;
Joseph Salack, bass; and Dave Wayne, drums, and the group appeared at venues in Taos, Santa Fe,
and Peñasco, NM.
Since 2014 to the present, Mary has led The Mary Rose Jazz Trio with herself on flute, alto flute,
wind synthesizer; Joseph Salack, piano, bass; and Lee Steck, drums. The trio offers an energetic and
diverse program of jazz standards, bossa novas, sambas, rock, funk, calypsos, ballads, and originals,
and has appeared at venues in Taos, NM.
