Mark Weinstein

Jazz flutist plays across the jazz genres

About Me

Jazz Flutist Mark Weinstein plays World based Jazz and Post-Bebop with world-class musicians rooted in Afro-Cuban, Brazilian, African, Jewish and Indian traditions. A Latin Jazz innovator, Mark was among the first jazz musicians to record with traditional Cuban rhythm sections. His classic recording, Cuban Roots, released in 1967 with Mark on trombone and Chick Corea on piano transformed Latin Jazz, as have his Latin Jazz recordings on flute, including Cuban Roots Revisited (1999) and more recently on Jazzheads, Algo Mas (2005), Con Alma (2007) and Timbasa (2010). A joint project with Cuban master musician Omar Soso, Tales From the Earth was released October 2009. His Brazilian jazz recordings include Tudo de Bom (2003) and on Jazzheads, O Nosso Amor (2006) and Lua e Sol (2008) and Jazz Brasil (2011). His Jewish albums Shifra Tanzt (2002) and Milling Time (2001) recorded in Kiev Ukraine, demonstrate the breadth of his musical conception as do his straight ahead albums, Seasoning (1996), Three Dueces (2000) and on Jazzheads, Straight, No Chaser (2008). His recent recordings on Jazzheads include such notables as Jazz master Kenny Barron, Latin Jazz legend Mark Levine and the young Cuban virtuosa Axel Tosco Laugart. Brazilian guitarist Romero Lubambo, Downbeat Rising Star Dave Stryker, percussionists Cyro Baptista and Pedrito Martinez are featured on his Jazzheads recordings as are bassists Santi Debriano, Nilson Mata and Panegiotis Andreau. He has also recorded with bassist Mike Richmond as well as guitarists Jean Paul Bourelly, Vic Juris, Paul Meyers, Brad Shepik and Ed Cherry and drummers and percussionists Cindy Blackman, Victor Lewis, Paulo Braga, Mauricio Herrera, Cecil Brooks III, Marque Gilmore, Francisco Aguabella, Guilherme Franco and Milton Cardona. Mark has performed as a sideman with Cal Tjader, Eddie Palmieri, Tito Puente, Larry Harlow, Herbie Mann, Maynard Ferguson, Thad Jones/Mel Lewis, Clark Terry, Joe Henderson and many others.
