Enjoying the start of a long jazz journey....

About Me

My show tries to challenge people’s perceptions about jazz, introducing new listeners to great toe tapping music that feels good. The show provides a fabulous opportunity to share my ‘jazz journey’ showcasing my favourite recordings from Blue Note, Impulse, CTI and others. I also talk about jazz records including the latest reissues helping collectors and audiophiles develop their own jazz collection. If I can help music lovers discover great jazz albums to add to their record collection then I’m achieving what I’ve set out to do.

When did you get into jazz? I’ve been obsessing about jazz for a few years now. Not a day goes by without listening, reading or thinking about the genre. Jazz is a guilty pleasure of mine (sadly, not shared by the family!). I’m an avid collector of records (mainly jazz reissues of course) and nearly everything I play on the show I own. Seriously though, it got me through the pandemic and continues to enrich my life and general wellbeing. It started when I first discovered Miles Davis’ ‘Kind of Blue’ and the wonderful poet laureate of the piano, Mr Bill Evans. I also love the photography and artwork that accompanies jazz culture and try to take phonic listeners on a journey of appreciation.

What makes Jazz music so special? For some people, ‘jazz’ conjures up thoughts of the 1990’s Fast Show comedy sketch, and for others they consider the genre to be self indulgent, inaccessible and unpredictable. I find jazz offers so much more than other music evoking thoughts and feelings of freedom, energy and movement. Learning about each of the musicians styles and appreciating how they collaborated sharing equal responsibility for the music they made is very rewarding. Jazz was often well recorded to the highest standards so the quality of the playback on vinyl is superb. Today, we are very fortunate to see an exciting resurgence in vinyl records with new music lovers appreciating the joy of the physical format. Jazz is a feature of the revival and worth spending time to discover!
