Marek J. Śmietański

During the day Marek is a scientist and university teacher, and in the evening he enjoys music as a concert photographer, music journalist and radio broadcaster.

About Me

I was born and raised in Lodz, Poland. I work as university professor and vice-dean. My adventure with music began in the 80s when I listened to popular music from old LPs and songs recorded from the radio (at first on reel-to-reel tapes, then on cassette tapes). I've come a long way from pop and rock, through electronic rock and progressive rock to jazz. A dozen or so years ago, I started taking photos at concerts as a hobby. Over time it became more and more serious, until finally my individual photos started appearing in Polish print magazines (dealing with both rock and jazz) and CD booklets. Sometimes I also write concert reports or columns about music.. Currently, I am the editor-in-chief and photographer of the Music HyperSpace portal and I host two jazz-related shows on the radio station Bemowo FM in Warsaw, Poland.

My Jazz Story

I love jazz because for me jazz means freedom (as for Brubeck or Monk). The first jazz record I bought was "Gene Norman presents An Evening with Louis Armstrong" (vinyl). I met a lot of jazz musician on the occasion of the concerts that I photographed. The best show I ever attended - there were too many of jazz concerts and it's hard to choose the best one... My advice to new listeners: "Don't think, listen with your heart, absorb with your whole body".
