About Me
My Jazz Story
Karim Gideon began his musical journey at the age of 10, playing trumpet in his middle school band. By high school, his growing passion for jazz drew the attention of the
legendary Dr. Teddy Harris Jr., whose mentorship opened the door to further guidance from jazz greats such as Marcus Belgrave and Harold McKinney. McKinney’s
celebrated weekly workshop at Detroit’s Serengeti Ballroom became a pivotal training ground, shaping Karim’s early development as a jazz artist.
Following high school, Karim enlisted in the U.S. Navy, where he continued to nurture his artistry while stationed in Yokosuka, Japan. His service also brought him to Dubai,
Norfolk, and Afghanistan—experiences that deepened both his resilience and his commitment to music.
After completing his military service, Karim pursued a degree in music at Wayne State University. His career since has included collaborations with internationally
acclaimed artists such as Randy Weston, Sean Jones, Danilo Pérez, Omar Sosa, Glen Hall, Bernie Koenig, Scott Gwinnell, and the Detroit Jazz Factory.
Today, Karim leads his own quartet, bringing audiences into a sound world that is rooted in Detroit’s jazz heritage yet unafraid to push forward with originality. He is also a
featured member of the In the Tradition Jazz Ensemble, continuing to carry forward the city’s storied legacy.
