My Jazz Story
I love jazz because among other things, it's smart and timeless. I was first exposed to jazz...at the Hartt School of Music in Hartford, CT when I was a child learning to play the violin. I heard the older students playing jazz and was deeply and permanently impressed by their skill and the coolness of the music. I've met lots of great musicians - but Steve Swallow stands out in my memory because when we met, I was such a novice and he was such a jazz giant - and yet he was so very kind to me. The best show I ever attended was...That's an unanswerable question! Way too many great shows. Generally I think of the last show I attended as the best one ever. I'm constantly impressed by the way jazz musicians can transport the listener to faraway places and elevated states of mind. The first jazz record I bought was...a 78rpm, red translucent, Gerry Mulligan record. I bought it because it was so cool looking. When I listened to it, I knew I had found something special and different. Another early purchase was Ella Fitzgerald singing Gershwin tunes - for the obvious reason - she's every singer's heroine! My advice to new listeners...just enjoy! Join in the music. Let it take you somewhere. Don't worry about "understanding" it. It's not necessary!
