About Me
Julio Awad is an Argentine pianist, composer, arranger and musical director whose creative path spans jazz performance, instrumental & contemporary music,
and high-profile musical theatre and film work. Born in Buenos Aires on April 3, 1977, he began formal piano study at age seven at the Conservatorio Nacional
“López Buchardo”, and subsequently expanded his training into composition, orchestration and conducting under mentors such as Juan Carlos Cirigliano and Lito
Valle.
In his late teens he began composing and performing for television and theatre in Argentina, and in 2000 he relocated to Spain where he has developed much of
his professional career.
His work as a jazz pianist has seen collaborations with internationally renowned improvisers (including Peter Erskine, Paul Wertico, Mark Egan and John
Patitucci) and the release of albums that fuse jazz, new-age and instrumental forms.
Parallel to this, Julio has become a major figure in Spanish-language musical theatre: as musical director, arranger and conductor for many large-scale
productions (e.g., Evita, Sonrisas y Lágrimas, Iba en serio, Priscilla, reina del desierto) and for film and television scores in Spain and Latin America.
His artistic versatility and excellence have been recognised by multiple honours:
Premio Talía 2024 for Best Musical Direction for El Fantasma de la Ópera.
Premio del Teatro Musical 2016 for Best Musical Direction (Iba en serio).
Premio del Público BroadwayWorld Spain 2015 for Best Musical Direction (Priscilla, Reina del Desierto).
Premio del Teatro Musical 2014 for Best Musical Direction (Sonrisas y Lágrimas).
Award for Best Original Music at the Semana de Cine Corto de Sonseca 2021 for Intermedio.
Today, Julio continues to lead ambitious projects at the intersection of jazz improvisation, theatrical storytelling and cinematic sound-worlds — always pushing
the boundary between virtuosity and emotional expressiveness.
