My Jazz Story

I was first exposed to jazz through my Dad, who loved the popular big bands of his era. He didn't have a large record collection, but there were a few gems like "Oscar Peterson Plays the Cole Porter Songbook". But it was actually Chuck Mangione with Tony Scott, Joe La Barbera and Gerry Niewood at Baker's Keyboard Lounge that forever changed my music world. My first time in a jazz club, front row almost on top of the stage and they started the set with "St. Thomas". That was it. I met Martin Wind briefly after the 2008 Detroit Jazz Festival when he was in town Matt Wilson's Arts and Crafts. I was a huge fan of his from this Bill Mays Trio sessions. We just talked briefly and then stayed in contact via email. He then asked me to help him get some YouTube videos on his website, and we went on to become good friends ever since. What a great musician and a great guy too. The best show I ever attended was between Bill Evans - Village Vanguard with Chuck Israels and Philly Joe Jones and Yusef Lateef at Baker's Keyboard Lounge. The first jazz record I bought was a reissue "Chick Corea: Inner Circle."
