Jacob P Teichroew

Classical saxophonist turned jazz bandleader, sideman, educator

About Me

Jacob Teichroew is a saxophonist, woodwind player, composer, bandleader, and music educator based in Brooklyn, New York. He was raised in Silver Spring, Maryland, where he took up the saxophone at age ten, and was trained as a classical saxophonist.

Before pursuing a degree in classical saxophone under Steven Jordheim at Lawrence University in Appleton, Wisconsin, Jacob fell in love with the music of Cannonball Adderley and Kenny Garrett, which inspired him to play jazz. He briefly got involved in the Washington, D.C. jazz scene, where he performed weekly as the lead alto player in the Thad Wilson Jazz Orchestra at H.R. 57.

While at Lawrence, Jacob focused on classical saxophone, and also received a degree in philosophy. Unable to shake an obsession with improvisation, he moved to New York in 2007 to attend Queens College, where he earned an M.A. in jazz studies, and studied with Antonio Hart, David Berkman, and Michael Philip Mossman. There he was awarded the Jimmy Heath Excellence in Jazz Studies scholarship.

While cultivating a career as a sideman in numerous ensembles, Jacob worked as a freelance writer, contributed to jazz.com, and edited jazz.about.com. He taught in over a dozen NYC public schools as a teaching artist, and led a private studio of saxophone, clarinet, and flute students.

Jacob leads his own quintet, and his debut album, Tableaux, was released in the Summer of 2013 on Fresh Sound/New Talent Records. Shortly after releasing the album, he studied at the Banff International Jazz Workshop in Banff, Canada, where he studied with Vijay Iyer, Ravi Coltrane, Tyshawn Sorey, and many other leading thinkers in jazz and creative music. Jacob joined the faculty of KIPP Infinity in June of 2013.

My Jazz Story

I fell in love with jazz after hearing Cannonball Adderley play with Miles on live recordings around 1959. I began playing in Washington D.C. big bands, and tried to sound just like Kenny Garrett. I went to college to study classical saxophone, but the entire time I was there, I had an unshakeable urge to develop a unique improvisational voice. I moved to New York City in 2007 to pursue jazz. There I studied with Antonio Hart and Michael Mossman, and have since developed a career as a sideman, bandleader, and music educator.
