As the main composer and arranger for Katonah, N.Y.-based jazz quartet Sweatshop, Edan Dover explores the endless creative horizons of modern jazz. He began his classical training on piano at age 7 and has been studying jazz with pianist Cary Brown since age 14. Although Edan experimented with pop and alternative songwriting in the past, he finds jazz the most exciting. When he's not writing music or practicing with Sweatshop, Edan attends NYU's Jazz Performance program. In 2004, Edan rounded up some musicians for a community jazz concert in Bedford Hills, an endeavor that soon led to the formation of Sweatshop. Edan has also played with world-renown musicians such as John Scofield, Lew Soloff and Paul Shaffer. His major influences are Bill Evans, Herbie Hancock, John Scofield, Wayne Shorter and Joshua Redman. Whether reinterpreting an old Herbie Hancock standard or blending funk grooves into his own original creations, Edan gains inspiration from providing listeners with a one-of-a-kind jazz experience. “I always try to find a way to innovate to give the listener a unique experience,” Edan says. “Whether it be changing the time signature, the feel, the voicings or harmonies under the melody.”
