About Me

Jazz has been an integral part of my life and listening experience since I was a teenager in the 1970s. It's been an adventure ever since. I've gone through many phases and acquired much music along the way. Jazz has also helped me discover many other types of music that have aided my learning and listening pleasures too.

I have written for All About Jazz since 1997 and also contributed to allmusic.com and jazz.com as well. I have written extensively about jazz and have produced a comprehensive jazz resource, Sound Insights at www.dougpayne.com, focusing on the music of many great jazz contributors including Roy Budd, The Clarke/Boland Big Band, Kenyon Hopkins, Boogaloo Joe Jones, Johnny Lytle, Hugh Masekela, Letta Mbulu, Gary McFarland, Jimmy McGriff, Oliver Nelson, Jimmy Ponder, Lalo Schifrin, Shirley Scott, Dr. Lonnie Smith, Gabor Szabo and Kai Winding.

Additionally, I have compiled the definitive discographies of the Aleph, CTI, Chisa, Chissa, Groove Merchant, Skye & Tappan Zee labels.

I have also written liner notes for many CDs issued by Universal, Vampi Soul, El!, JSR and King Records and produced compilations by Ennio Morricone, Roy Budd and Lalo Schifrin.

All About Jazz needs your support

All About Jazz & Jazz Near You were built to promote jazz music: both recorded and live events. We rely primarily on venues, festivals and musicians to promote their events through our platform. With club closures, shelter in place and an uncertain future, we've pivoted our platform to collect, promote and broadcast livestream concerts to support our jazz musician friends. This is a significant but neccesary effort that will help musicians now, and in the future. You can help offset the cost of this essential undertaking by making a donation today. In return, we'll deliver an ad-free experience (which includes hiding the bottom right video ad). Thank you.
