My House Concert Story

I have played several house concerts in my life, but I would have to say the most memorable one was a concert I did in Siegburg, Germany. I have a friend who is a resident there and he invited me over to play a house concert and some additional performances in Dusseldorf, Cologne and Bonn. The bass I borrowed was from a bass Luther named Daniel Kress and it just so happened that Ron Carter used the bass with Cedar Walton a month or so before I played it. Anyway, the concert was in a fairly big house with a large half spiral staircase that lead to an l-shaped loft. There must have been at least 60-75 people in this place. My friend Michael Sorg played piano, there was a percussionist from Brazil, Caroline Pook played violin, Peggy O(mikes wife) sang, I played bass along side John Goldsby who played arco bass. We did some very cool arrangements of Joni Mitchell tunes, an Alban Berg tune turned into a tango piece and some standards. It was heavy all the way around! The crowd was silent while the music was going on. Everyone was attentive, listening and hip to the scene. I was amazed at the appreciation the people had for the music we played.I will never forget that trip.
