The first jazz record I bought was...(actually it was a cassette purchased in an appliance store - yes this appliance store sold boom boxes and had a small music section, when I was about 12 years old) Miles Ahead. It wasn't at all what I expected as I was really looking to hear that more traditional jazz combo sound (I probably really wanted to hear something like Hank Mobley's Soul Station, or Tenor Madness), but Miles Ahead was something I knew required patiences. The orchestration and the deep swing hit me over the head, and still to this day has a special place in my heart.
