About Me
Bob Jacobson is a musician and free lance writer in Baltimore, Maryland.
I worked 32 years as a social worker but now work a bunch of part-time jobs: musician, free lance writer, teacher (music history, sax & clarinet), tour guide. As you can see from the AAJ web-site, I've written many book reviews and a few reviews of CDs, movies and concerts. My articles have also appeared in DownBeat, The Christian Science Monitor, the children's magazines AppleSeeds and Cobblestone and local Baltimore publications. In 2009 I contributed chapters on Ellis Larkins and Hank Levy to the book Music at the Crossroads: Lives & Legacies of Baltimore Jazz. I've compiled interviews with local musicians for a book tentatively titled Musicians' Gigs from Hell: From the Horrible to the Laughable. I've collaborated with Benny Golson on a children's picture book, as yet unpublished (hint), and have extensively researched Mary Lou Williams, with the aim of writing a biography for young adults. Like most sax players, I started on clarinet as a kid and double on it now. I've played mostly mainstream jazz but have experience in salsa, rock and R&B. The 17 tunes I've composed over the past few years include swing, rumba, bossa nova, bolero and tango. Four appear in the Baltimore Real Book (2007). Since 2003 I've been on the steering committee of the advocacy organization Baltimore Jazz Alliance. My band, Sounds Good!, appears on one cut of BJA's 14-song CD, Baltimore Jazzscapes, released in July, 2006. I've also become involved in BJA's outreach to children, with two program -- a musical instrument “petting zoo” and a concert introducing children to jazz.
