Barry Greene - Jazz Guitarist

Jazz guitarist Barry Greene is widely respected for his swinging time feel, rich tone, and deeply melodic approach to improvisation. Rooted in the classic jazz guitar tradition yet unmistakably personal in voice, Greene’s playing combines technical command with warmth, lyricism, and musical clarity. Greene has released numerous acclaimed recordings including Giants, Resurgence, Sojourner, The Other Side, Urban Jazz, Urban Jazz II, and In the Meantime, documenting a broad range of modern jazz settings and collaborations. His work consistently reflects a deep respect for the language of the music while exploring fresh harmonic and rhythmic ideas. Throughout his career Greene has recorded and performed with an impressive roster of artists including Pat Bianchi, David Kikoski, Steve Nelson, Paul Bollenback, Gene Bertoncini, Danny Gottlieb, Adam Nussbaum, Mark Whitfield, Rodney Jones, Dave Stryker, Reuben Rogers, Joel Frahm, Seamus Blake, and Ulysses Owens Jr., among many others. These collaborations highlight his versatility and deep connection to the modern jazz community. In addition to his performing career, Greene spent more than three decades as Professor of Jazz Studies at the University of North Florida, where he mentored generations of emerging musicians and helped shape one of the country’s respected collegiate jazz programs. Greene’s influence as an educator extends worldwide through Barry Greene Video Lessons (BGVL), a highly regarded online platform used by jazz guitarists around the globe. His instructional books and materials—published by Mel Bay Publications and through numerous digital formats—are widely praised for their clarity, musical depth, and practical insight into the jazz language. With the release of Giants in 2026 and his retirement from university teaching, Greene is entering a new chapter focused on performing, recording, and touring—continuing to share his distinctive voice as both a guitarist and a lifelong advocate for the jazz tradition. “To me Barry Greene is just about one of the best; not only as a player, but also as a writer and a teacher… a world-class musician.” — Pat Martino “Great tone, control and musical judgment — my favorite type of player.” — Russell Malone “Monster chops, soulful feel, full/rich classic jazz tone, and virtuosic harmonic techniques establish him as a top-tier guitarist.” — Howard Paul
