About Me
Avon Lucas is a self-taught musician with a fresh, unorthodox approach. He plays acoustic, electric upright, fretless and 4 thru 9 string electric Basses. He also utilizes Midi guitar Synth textures, which greatly expand his sonic possibilities. He is comfortable in many genres of music. Rock, Latin, Jazz, Jazz Fusion, Reggae, R&B and Blues are some genres he has recorded. He credits his early development and musical “feel” to the Blues idiom and guitar icon Bobby Parker. His sax-like approach to playing Bass balances astonishing improvisational flourishes against a rock-solid groove and beautiful lyricism. On extended range 9 string Bass you can hear his guitarist-like chord approach which is a unique stylistic feature amongst Bassist. Musicians in the DC metropolitan area acknowledge Avon Lucas as a world class bassist. He was once quoted saying: “Playing music is like chasing infinity, you’ll never catch it. For me, never arriving is a very cool thing! The many lessons of the musical journey are enlightening; keeping my thinking and playing fresh”. Others have noticed Avon Lucas’ Bass playing too. In 2002, he was nominated by his peers as the 3rd runner up for a WAMA Award as an instrumentalist in the Reggae World Music category. Avon has played alongside many other artist as well: Peaches and Herb, Atlantic Starr, Michael Henderson, Norman Connors, Larry Bright, Jean Carne, Charles Carlton, Mama Jama and Southern Rock guitar icon Dan Toler formally of the Allman Brothers, just to name a few. If you love music, specifically bass, then you owe it to yourself to check out Avon Lucas. He plays music for the mind, heart and soul; in short, Bass Ear Candy!
