About the Album
This love song was written in 1939 by Peter de Rose and Mitchell Parish for the musical review "Earl Carroll's Vanities". It was first released by Tommy Dorsey and his Orchestra and subsequently covered by other big bands such as Glenn Miller, Kay Kyser, Bob Crosby, and Gene Krupa. In Jeudi’s new cover, released some 83 years later on March 4, 2022, she approaches the song as a jazz ballad with her vintage-voiced vocals giving it an intimate, seductive tone that highlights and plays against both the optimism and the melancholy in the lyrics. Jeudi’s signature stylings are reminiscent of the chanteuses one would have found at the juncture of the jazz age, tin pan alley and the golden age of Hollywood, yet, the song is made fresh and modern by her vulnerable delivery and the simplicity of only piano and guitar backing her up. Jazz guitarist David Boswell creates a tender melodic accompaniment on both classical and resonator guitars, which while underscoring and highlighting these timeless emotions, also roots them in the present. This is a song that while wistful in tone, reaches beyond mere nostalgia with anticipation towards a better tomorrow. Here the plaintive prose of the lyrics is never completely out of mind and storytelling is served, but hope and love prevails.
