Album Description

MARC JOHNSON – Bass ~~~ PETER ERSKINE — Drums “I’ve had the great pleasure of making this recording with vocalist/composer Cathy Segal-Garcia, along with pianist/arranger Phillip Strange, and bassist extraordinaire Marc Johnson. I think that the resulting recording is the freshest vocal project which I’ve ever been involved in, and it’s one of my favorite recordings of the past year. Cathy’s singing is superb, Phil’s piano playing is delightful and fresh; Marc Johnson is his usual self (brilliant and supportive) and the arrangements are terrific. (Hey, I like the way I sound too!) I really dig the mood on this recording! We made this music at my favorite studio in Los Angeles, the Mad Hatter, with great engineer, Bernie Kirsh (who normally does all of Chick Corea’s engineering, among others). I make quite a few recordings, but I have to say that I enjoyed this one more than most any other I’ve done in a long time; the sound and the music are so honest! This is the way music should be made and recorded, I think...as well as listened to (remember: not too loud!). This recording deserves to be heard by as many people as possible! Enjoy!” Peter Erskine 1. MR. HALL 5:00 (Segal-Garcia) An easy swing tune, an original, dedicated to Jim Hall. 2. SOME OTHER TIME 7:18 (Bernstein/Comden/Green) An introspective, prayer-like arrangement. 3. THE STORY 4:10 ( Segal-Garcia) A light, melodic original samba, favored by audiences. 4. MY ONE AND ONLY LOVE 5:16 (Wood/Mellin) Cathy & Marc play this ballad as a duo. 5. SEPTEMBER IN THE RAIN 6:24 (Warren) Instrumental only, an incredible conversation! 6. DIANE 7:27 (Segal-Garcia) A dramatic arrangement of an original ballad. 7. DEARLY BELOVED 4:22 (Kern/Mercer) A Peter Erskine-style-samba arrangement, exciting! 8. SLEEPIN’ BEE 3:51 (Arlen/Capote) Cathy & Marc duo in a sensuous swing. 9. HOW DEEP IS THE OCEAN 6:23 (Berlin) Instrumental only...wonderful interplay! 10. BUD POWELL 5:54 (Corea/Cohan) A bebop arrangement of Chick Corea’s great tune. Cathy Segal-Garcia grew up in Boston, under the musical influence of her father, saxophonist Mike Segal; and her mother and sisters, all singers too. Her listening influences were varied; R & B and jazz singers, big bands, groups like Chick Corea and Weather Report, and cool-jazz artists like Miles Davis and MJQ. After attending Berklee in the early 70’s for Arranging & Composition, she relocated to the West Coast. Cathy now is a voice and jazz clinician and performs in clubs and concerts around the world. “A model of warm, exquisitely focused jazz vocalizing...sensuous voice and cool harmonies.” Don Heckman, Los Angeles Times Phillip Strange holds a Masters Degree in classical piano performance. In addition to having won various piano competitions and having been featured as a concerto soloist with orchestra, he also has broad experience in composition and jazz performance. He’s performed with such diverse talents as Joe Henderson, Dave Holland, Lew Tabakin, James Moody, Ernie Watts, Richie Cole, Gary Foster, etc. Living in Japan now, he currently tours around the world, teaching and performing. The blending of his classical background and his love and knowledge of jazz make him a musician who is serious about his music, and a great modern jazz style has emerged from this young man.
