Jacob Blickenstaff

Music Photographer and Writer

About Me

As a photographer, Jacob has been bringing together sound and image for the past 7 years. He has shot album covers for Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings, Antibalas, Dave ‘Baby’ Cortez, Laura Cantrell, and has been published in magazines and newspapers around the world. In 2009, the Stax Museum of American Soul Music mounted a solo exhibition of Jacob’s work, “Still Life in Soul: Contemporary Music Photography of Jacob Blickenstaff.” Jacob’s eye and heart are turned towards a still under-appreciated, rich and varied music history; to those still creating irreducibly unique, moving music. Personal projects have taken him through New Orleans, Chicago, Memphis, Nashville and Detroit, seeking the authentic originators and practitioners of an increasingly lost art.

My Jazz Story

The first jazz album I ever shoplifted was John Coltrane, Live in Japan, from Blockbuster Music when I was a bad high school kid with a good GPA. I also got into buying vinyl when I realized that I could pick up used LP's of interesting looking albums for 3 bucks while the used CD's were 10. I was a jazz nerd in high school, I played bass in the jazz band and tuba in the orchestra. I went to college at N.Y.U. where I studied in the jazz performance program for about 2 years before going into an individualized study program. I'm into every kind of music - rock and roll, soul, country, folk, rhythm and blues, latin, African - and love jazz as part of the spectrum.
