About Me

I got into jazz while in college in the early 1990s. As with other art forms (film, literature, painting, etc.) my interest followed a steady progression toward the avant-garde. I want to be jarred. I can--and do--enjoy work that follows a traditional line, but much of it feels flimsy beside the likes of James Joyce, Jean-Luc Godard and Cecil Taylor. I am a former contributor to Jazz Inside Magazine, Cleveland Scene and Cleveland Free Times, and was the books columnist for Nectar Magazine. I am also the author of two novels, "The Starlight Line" and "Friction."

My Favorites

  1. Andrew Hill - Judgment
  2. Cecil Taylor - Live in the Black Forest
  3. Ornette Coleman - Free Jazz
  4. Miles Davis - Miles Smiles
  5. Brad Mehldau - Largo
  6. John Coltrane - Ascension
  7. Grant Green - Matador
  8. Albert Ayler - Live in Greenwich Village
  9. Frank Sinatra - Sinatra Sings for Only the Lonely
  10. Bob Dylan - Highway 61 Revisited
