Ethnomusicologist, singer-flutist, writer, radio host (KRTU San Antonio 91.7FM).

Katchie Cartwright is a flutist, singer, ethnomusicologist, radio host, journalist and retired professor of music. Born in New York City, she has lived in San Antonio since 2006. She holds a PhD in music from The Graduate Center of The City University of New York. Research related to her dissertation appears in Ramblin' on My Mind: New Perspectives on the Blues (University of Illinois Press, 2008). Her discography as a bandleader contains titles under her own name and in ensembles co-lead with alto saxophonist Richard Oppenheim, joined by drummer-producer Bill Goodwin, bassists Cameron Brown and Belden Bullock, and pianist James Weidman.

Her recordings present a mix of jazz tunes, original compositions, improvisations with Indian classical musicians (A Mumbai of the Mind), music of John Cage (La Faute de la Musique), world jazz (Tales and Tongues), and Brazilian music (Rainy Afternoon/Tarde de Chuva; featuring Marco Antonio Santos, Jan Flemming, and Fabio Augustinis). As a Fulbright Senior Specialist, Cartwright has led workshops and residencies in West Africa, South America, the Caribbean, Europe, South Asia, and the Middle East. Since 2007, she has served as a radio host for Trinity University's KRTU San Antonio 91.7 FM, first developing Planet Jazz, a world jazz program, and later, Caminhos do Jazz, which features world music and Brazilian mixtures.

My Jazz Story

My tastes are wide-ranging. I love improvisational music of the early kind, the avant-garde, free jazz, intricately composed jazz, bluesy jazz, classical jazz and jazz-informed music from all over the globe, vocal and instrumental. I am particularly interested in reviewing albums by women instrumentalists and artists from underrepresented areas/genres.
