About Me

Jazz fan & podcaster in North East England

Having worked for many years as an academic and research statistician/epidemiologist, I now volunteer for various groups in and around Newcastle upon Tyne in North East England. Since 2019 I have produced and presented a regular radio show called 'Jazz on the Tyne', focusing on jazz in the North East, together with music from further afield. The show was originally broadcast on Hive Radio, an online radio station operated by Community Arts Project North East. It now appears as a Hive Radio podcast on Mixcloud. I am always interested in new music and value the opportunity to speak with musicians about their work. North East England has a thriving jazz scene and I'm keen to highlight this to people both in the region and beyond.

My Jazz Story

I was first exposed to jazz in the early 1990s, when I was working in the United States and heard jazz regularly on the radio. I was keen to discover more about the music and in 1995 I went to the Montreux Jazz Festival in Switzerland. I was blown away by the experience; so much so that I returned to the festival on a further 12 occasions, and later wrote a book about my visits to Montreux.
