Mark Berman
Pianist, Composer, Arranger, Music Director in New York
About Me
Mark Berman has written music for, played and recorded with the proverbial who's who of
jazz, pop and rock, with a resume that reads like a history of modern music: Aretha
Franklin, Carole King, Leslie Gore, Phoebe Snow, Wycliff Gordon, Hugh Jackman, Gladys
Knight, and the list goes on, at such notable venues as The Blue Note, Birdland, The
Rainbow Room, The Supper Club, Merkin Hall and Carnegie Hall. NPR's Studio 360 show,
created and hosted by Kurt Andersen, spotlighted his piano improvisation dedicated to the
victims of Hurricane Sandy.
A graduate of the Hartt School of Music, Berman officially entered the pop culture pantheon
when he played piano on the world famous theme to Sex and the City. He has appeared
on TV with Good Morning America, Sex and the City and The Royal Pains, playing
piano, of course, and has been a powerful presence on Broadway, where he has conducted
orchestras for Rent, Smokey Joe's Cafe and Blood Brothers, and played lead
piano/keyboards on The Life (Cy Coleman himself recruited Berman: he heard him
practicing in another room, entered, listened, and demanded he be a part of the venture,
but that's another story); The Boy from Oz; Hairspray; 42nd Street; Dreamgirls; Jesus Christ
Superstar; Hair and Spider-Man.
