Centro d’Arte explores the most adventurous aspects of the music of today
“Centro d’Arte degli Studenti dell’Università di Padova” was founded in 1945. The name translates as “University of Padua Students' Center for the Arts”, and originally it was a student association supported by the University of Padua, the second-oldest in Italy (founded in 1222) and the world's fifth-oldest university. Since 1946, Centro d’Arte has been organizing a concert series, first focused on Chamber Music, and then almost exclusively dedicated to Jazz and New Music. In the '50s and '60s Centro d’Arte organized concerts featuring jazz masters like Lennie Tristano, the Modern Jazz Quartet, Chet Baker, Thelonious Monk as well as important contemporary music composers and performers like David Tudor and Karlheinz Stockhausen. Starting in the the 1970s Centro d’Arte has been organizing the first seasonal jazz series in Italy, and has focused on the most advanced developments in jazz and creative music, inviting the Art Ensemble of Chicago, Muhal Richard Abrams, Anthony Braxton, Roscoe Mitchell, Sam Rivers, Evan Parker, George Lewis, ROVA, Albert Mangelsdorff, Bill Dixon; and then Carla Bley, Tim Berne, John Zorn, William Parker, Wadada Leo Smith, Peter Broetzmann, The Thing, Nels Cline, and many others. At the same time, the series mixed different genres and traditions, with concerts by Terry Riley, Morton Feldman, Frederic Rzewski, David Behrman, Carl Stone, Nicolas Collins, The Hub, etcetera. Today Centro d’Arte is an independent non-profit cultural association, still closely linked to the University of Padua, and its concert series continues to explore the most adventurous aspects of the music of today.
