A swinging big band, a hot swing group (like Royal Crown Revue), or the soulful styling of Diana Krall. It's all good and it's all definitely jazz. Most importantly, it's not boxed music being packaged and marketed as jazz.

My Jazz Story

I love jazz because... I was first exposed to jazz...in Chicago. On a dare, I went to a jazz club with some friends. There I had the pleasure of hearing jazz live for the first time. It was an awesome experience and one I will never forget. I met Charlie Harrington...when I went to my first live jazz listening safari. I had never met a musician that was all of the things I admired about other genres of music but without all of the grimy, gritty, and gross things that detract from other types of music. The best show I ever attended was...the Village Vanguard Jazz Orchestra. What a group and what a room! The first jazz record I bought was...Count Basie, Basie Big Band. My advice to new listeners...be open. Jazz is many thing to many people. There's jazz like Spyro Gyra then there's jazz like Count Basie. There's Lyle Mays and then there's Willie "The Lion" Smith. Don't box yourself in but always follow Ella's mantra in that it don't mean a thing...
