About Me

I was born in Russia. I emigrated to the States at age 3. Grew up in Connecticut where I underwent my primary education. Studied journalism at New York University. Musical tastes started with the Beatles, them moved to heavy metal, then hardcore, moving onto the Grateful Dead and jazz simultaneously. My first jazz experience, apart from my father's Ellington, was buying the cassette of Bitches Brew at age 13 because, as a full on metal head, I thought the name was cool. I started with the wrong side of the wrong tape of the two cassette set. Things began with “Spanish Key” for me. I then listened and listened and expanded my knowledge obtaining recordings of all the participants. Miles Davis led me to John McLaughlin who led to John Surman to Evan Parker and so on.
