About Me
Brian Morton is a Scottish writer, journalist and broadcaster, mainly specialising in jazz and modern literature. He is co-author of The Penguin Guide to Jazz Recordings.
I'm a former academic, Times journalist and BBC broadcaster. I presented programmes on BBC Radio 3 and BBC Radio Scotland, where I had my own daily live arts programme. Since resigning in 2003 - they were trying to dumb me down! - I've gone back to freelance writing and small scale farming in the wilds of Argyll. Author of various book, including 10 editions of the Penguin Guide to Jazz (eight of them with the late Richard Cook), biographies of Miles Davis, Shostakovich, Edgar Allan Poe, Woodrow Wilson and Prince! Plus some travel writing and fiction, under another name. I play alto and soprano saxophones, or rather these days I look at them longingly, wondering if I'll have to time to play either. Too much else - land, children, endlessly changing surroundings - to be getting on with . . .

I no longer live in a metropolis. Easy to get, or to feel, 'cut off' in a situation like this. AAJ allows me to feel connected and across the latest movements and developments. I am not an internet sceptic or snob, and you don't have to be to know there's a lot of rubbish out there. AAJ always feels authoritative and to the point - none of that ad hominem nonsense that afflicts so many other sites. All power to its/their elbow! This page was last updated on 2026-09-11.
