Roland Kirk - Cuckoo Serenade
Source:
JazzWax by Marc Myers
On Sept. 16 and 17, 1964. Roland Kirk recorded tracks for an important album for Mercury called I Talk With the Spirits. It's important because of its instrumental eclecticism, its spiritual qualities and its original compositions by Kirk and playing by the group. The music holds up gloriously. It's independent-minded, it's melodic and it's soulful. On these particular days, two songs were recorded—the album's title track and Serenade to a Cuckoo. The personnel on both songs featured Roland Kirk (c-fl,African ...

But that album still left me wondering where this ace drummer, composer and bandleader was going to head next. Perhaps Miller herself didn't even know, that is, until a spewing volcano in Iceland scuttled her plans for a six-week ...

For me, the top forty slots are pretty much dominated by groups like the Honey Ear Trio. The trio, sax, drum and bass, with some electronics and effects for added ...

Steve Lopez takes Nathaniel Anthony Ayers to San Francisco, where he is honored for helping decrease the stigma of mental illness.
He was so eager to make the trip, he called several times to make sure it hadn't been canceled.
Mr. Lopez, is the pickup still at 9 a.m?"

When I pulled up, he was standing on the sidewalk playing a skid row reveille on his trumpet. He had a small ...
