Ema Walker

Ema Walker lives and works as a jazz singer in the serene locale of Hartford, CT where she relocated from New York City in 2004. The city of Hartford’s vibrant jazz community has welcomed her with open arms, allowing her to become a fixture among some truly world-renowned and talented musicians.

Shortly after her move to Connecticut, Ema was discovered by Jackie Mclean, who was so impressed with her talent that he invited her to be the first ever Jazz Vocal Performance student at the prestigious Hartt School of Music, where she graduated with a Bachelor of Music in May, 2006.

Ema Walker has studied under and performed alongside some of the best musicians that the jazz world has to offer. Steve Davis (trombone), Nat Reeves (bass), and Dena Derose (Voice) have instructed her in jazz theory, history, performance, and composition. She has also performed numerous gigs with Eric Alexander, Joe Farnsworth, Mike Ledonne, David Hazeltine, and others.

With influences spanning several genres, Ema’s music rings deep with emotion. Taking cues from artists such as Sarah Vaughan, Ella Fitzgerald, Dinah Washington, Aretha Franklin, and Joni Mitchell, Ema has developed a distinctive style that combines modern R&B and folk elements with the emotional power of classic jazz. The result is sound that is both subtle and stirring, refined and yet reassuringly simple.
