Yaniel is a Cuban Cellist, Pianist and Composer who works with improvisation and Afro-Cuban heritage
Yaniel Matos is a Cuban born, living in Brazil, piano and cello player. He had his first contact with music through his family. At 8 began to study cello and piano at Conservatorio Estevan Sala, in Santiago de Cuba till 1994, when he moved to Havana to study Composition. He played with Chucho Valdes, Issac Delgado, Orlando Valles Maraca, among others, having done several internacional tours. He moved to Sao Paulo, Brazil in 2000. In 2003 he founded Mani Padme Trio, with Ricardo Mosca e Du Moreira, and recorded “Um dia de chuva”. In 2008 Matos created the “Cuba Jazz Plus”, a quintet of contemporary jazz formed by Cuban jazz musicians. He released his first solo album in 2008, “En Movimiento”. In 2014 he released his new album “La Mirada” where he finds in the notes and words the closeness that binds him to both cultures, Cuban and Brazilian. He performs in several different formats appearing as trio, quartet, quintet and solo, showcasing a summary of his Cuban experience in Brazil in a language that is very Jazzy and modern, with latin spices and rhythmic mastery, full of colors and descriptive sounds. He has played and recorded with Carlinhos Brown, Max de Castro, Kiko Loureiro, Angra, Timbalada, Heartbreak, Jane Brunnett, Lenine, Diogo Poças, Antonio Pinto, Sarah Sharp among many others. Nominated in the 14th Annual Independent Music Award in the category Jazz With Vocals Album. He has been in the US for 2015 SXSW festival and recently, in September of 2015, did a mini tour in Texas with his American trio.
