I love jazz because It is the only original American art form; and, at its absolute best (especially when it's live), it is for me not just mere entertainment, but a truly spiritual sort of communication. I was first exposed to jazz by my father who listened to swing music and loved Louis Armstrong. The best show I ever attended was Sonny Rollins (every chance I got). The first jazz record I bought was Jimmy Smith Greatest hits (Blue Note). My best advice to new listeners is to always keep an open mind and to be patient. A lot of the best jazz takes some time to get used to and fully appreciate.
